Kau Kau Restaurant – A Food Review

12.26.24 | Jess

Kau Kau Restaurant Front Door

Kau Kau is a Hawaiian restaurant located in the 57th Street Antique Mall in Sacramento.
They are open Wednesday to Sunday. On Wednesday to Friday 11:30am to 9am, Saturday 10am to 3pm and 4pm to 9pm, and on Sunday 10am to 3pm.

Address: 855 57th St Suite C, Sacramento, California.

Overall, the food here is very delicious but a little heavy. So come here with an appetite. The homemade spam was so good and thick. My two favorites were the macadamia nut waffle and the Kau Kau Benedict.

Appetizers

Spam Masubi

On a white plate is a white rice shaped as a rectangle. On top of the rice is a rectangular shaped, homemade, spam with soy sauce. The stacked rice and spam are wrapped in seaweed.

The spam masubi comes one per order. What I really enjoyed about this is the spam is homemade. They make their spam at the restaurant which is awesome because they give a thick piece of homemade spam. In between the rice and spam is a huli-huli sauce that tastes similar to a sweet soy sauce. The rice is perfectly cooked, but the nori is a little soft and wilted, not crispy like I had hoped. Overall, I thought it was a solid spam masubi; it tastes delicious.

Manapua

Three steamed Chinese-style buns with black and white sesame seeds and sliced green onion on top and a dark pink flower in the middle in a bamboo steam basket. Inside the steamed buns are char siu pork, onions and cilantro.

The Managua comes with an order of three steamed buns. Inside is char six pork, onions, and cilantro. If you dislike cilantro, do not order these there is a lot of cilantro in the buns. Besides the cilantro, the pork has good flavor but a little chewy and the buns were soft.

Main Dishes

Portuguese Sausage and Egg

Two portuguese sausage patties with two over easy eggs and two mounds of brown rice with black and white sesames seeds and green onion on top. Garnished with a purple flower.

The two homemade Linguisa Portuguese sausage. The two eggs are placed on top of the brown rice mounds with green onions.

The Portuguese Sausage comes with two mounds of rice, two eggs, and two sausage patties. The sausage was tasty. It has that spiced linguisa taste that’s delicious. The rice was perfectly cooked. The eggs were a little over done but the yoke was still runny on one of eggs. I loved the green onions they gave the dish additional flavor. Overall, I thought the dish was okay but I loved the homemade feel of the dish.

Macadamia Nut Waffle with Chicken Katsu

Three golden-brown breaded chicken strips on top of a macadamia nut waffle with a red sriracha mango syrup and butter on the side.
Three chicken cutlets on top of a macadamia nut waffle with sriracha mango syrup and butter on the side.

The Mac Nut Waffle was so tasty. The waffle was soft, sweet, and the macadamia nut flavor was a subtle but delicious. The sriracha mango syrup was so delicious with the waffle. The syrup was sweet with a little heat from the sriracha. The syrup was most delicious on the chicken. Th crunchy chicken with the sweet syrup was so good. This dish is an elevated chicken and waffles dish that is a must try. However, definitely do not try if you are allergic to macadamia nuts.

Kau Kau Benedict

Two Kau Kau Benedict’s. On top of crispy taro cakes are homemade spam, poached egg, and sesame miso hollandaise sauce with green onions.

The Kau Kau Benedict was delicious. The crispy taro cakes was crunchy and sweet and gave the Benedict an elevated taste. The poached eggs were perfect. The hollandaise sauce was so delicious. When you take a bite with all the elements it all comes together beautifully. This Benedict is a wonderful Asian rendition. And o course the green onions gave it a wonderful flavor.

Dessert

To the Left is a bowl of single-scoop guava ice cream. To the Right is a bowl of single-scoop Kona coffee ice cream.
A single-scoop of guava ice cream (Left). A single-scoop of Kona coffee ice cream (Right).

For dessert we only ordered the homemade ice cream. We were so full from our meal that the only dessert we wanted to eat was the lightest possible dessert which is the ice cream. We chose the guava ice cream and the coffee ice cream. The guava ice cream had a subtle flavor which was really nice. Same with the coffee ice cream, a very subtle, nice flavor.
