Review

The murder mystery full of secrets, intrigue, and comedy. I thought it was funny how they kept wanting to leave to house but couldn’t. Each fought with a different person every scene. Then in the end they all wanted to live together.

There are moments in the film that I thought had some significance.

Caterina was reading book called White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky. It’s a short story about a man that suffers from loneliness and unrequited love.

I believe it encompasses the love pentagon between Marcello, Veronica, Agostina, Margherita, and Maria; especially Agostina. But why is Caterina reading it instead of somebody else? Perhaps the scene is foreboding the ending or of who is the murderer? Or is it simply because of the director thought it looked nice?

The show down between Margherita and Veronica was an intense scene. The lights were dim, dark, black. The camera was strictly on them going back and forth. Then it stops and they kiss. They both realize they have the same taste in men and the same paramour. Then lights come on and comedy begins. I loved it.

There was also the food Maria made for the group. The list of food was (in this order shown):

  1. Olivier Salads (Russian potato salad)
  2. Prawn Cocktail
  3. Pumpkin Ravioli (Italian)
  4. Roasted Quail with Mostarda di Cremona (fruit candied in syrup)
  5. Profiteroles and other chocolate and crème desserts

I was trying to figure out the significance of the food listed. The only thing that stood out was everyone devoured the food. Which makes me think that is how Marcello started his love affair with her. Maria did say that this is a menu Marcello wanted her to make for everyone. Maybe these were all his favorite food that she made him and it’s significant because none of his other mistresses and wife can make that kind of food. I thought somebody was going to poison the food. But no everyone devoured it and was fine. A light hearted moment /comedic moment.

The colors the director used stood out to me. All the colors on the walls and furnerature in the house, the women were wearing (as noted above in character sections). The house and the furniture were all grand and colorful. The houses’ interior looked like a house in 19th century. Lots of antiques and color. To me it looks cozy and warm but also stiff. The only places that didn’t have much color were the kitchen and the Maria’s room.

Overall review and recommendation

If you want to know how Marcello was murdered and how all the women interacted with each other go watch it on Netflix or any other platform you can find it on.

I really enjoyed this murder mystery movie and I hope you enjoyed reading my review.
