The Divorce Party – A Book Review

The Divorce Party - feature image

The Divorce Party by Laura Dave

This audiobook is 7 hours and 46 minutes long.

*DISCLAIMER* This review does contain spoilers.

The book’s plot revolves around two couples, Gwen and Thomas, and Maggie and Nate, and the events unfolding on a single, eventful day full of drama. Gwen and Thomas have decided to celebrate their upcoming divorce with a party.

I enjoyed the pettiness and tenacity of Gwen to pull off the most extravagant divorce party. She hired the mistress, who happens to have a catering business, to cater the event. And she carefully planned Thomas’s arrival to coincide with the caterer (his mistress) serving the guests. If Gwen’s storyline was a short or TikTok video, the comments would say “This is the level of pettiness I strive for”.

I really enjoyed following Maggie and Nate’s storyline. Maggie’s difficulty in comprehending Nate’s family’s financial prosperity reminded me of the struggle I hoped to see in Rachel from “Crazy Rich Asians”. Throughout the day, Maggie questioned whether she truly knew Nate. I empathized with her in that aspect. Nate’s personality didn’t have many layers, but he was undeniably a great guy. We witnessed this quality throughout the book, with his only shortcomings being his reluctance to discuss his financial situation and personal life.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I listened to it 2 times. I am looking forward to listening to more of Dave’s books on Audible. I rate this book an 8.5/10.
